Ingredients – How does it work?
At the base Proactiv body wash is a salicylic acid based cleanser with effectiveness boosted by exfoliating beads. The wash also contains soothing botanical ingredients that bring down inflammation and improve wound healing.
Let’s look at the ingredients in more details so it’s easier to understand how this product works.
Salicylic acid
Not much to say about this. A proven acne fighter that’s been used for decades and decades. It’s effectiveness is comparable to benzoyl peroxide but it’s generally tolerated better than BP.
You should note that many people report that their skin gets used to salicylic acid over time. So it’s possible this product stops working at some point.
Exfoliating beads
These beads break the outer layer of the skin and help to remove dead skin cells that may clogs skin pores. On the whole this is good, but for people with sensitive skin these beads might be too harsh.
These beads are less of a problem when you use this product as body wash. Facial skin is usually more sensitive to this abrasive action.
Camellia Sinensis (green tea) extracts
Green tea extract is one of the most promising natural acne treatments. Here are just a few examples of what clinical studies have shown that green tea extract can do for the skin.
- One study showed that applying 2% green tea lotion for 6 weeks reduced total pimple count by 58% on average. This study had 20 participants.
- Another study showed that applying 3% green tea lotion for 8 weeks resulted in significant reduction in sebum production. Certain hormones (androgens) act on skin glands and increase sebum production. Green tea extract can block these hormones from acting on the skin glands and thus reduces sebum production.
- Several studies have shown that green tea extract can protect the skin from damaging UV rays. This is indirectly helpful in acne as it reduces inflammation in the skin and thus reduces likelihood of breakouts.
- Other studies have shown that green tea can protect the skin from aging caused by sunlight.
Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera)
Aloe Vera is another well-known and effective botanical skin care ingredient.
One study found that Aloe Vera gel treats psoriasis more effectively than a proven prescription treatment. Sure this study was not done on acne, but often what works for psoriasis or eczema can work for acne also, because they all are inflammatory skin conditions.
- A few studies show Aloe Vera is an effective treatment for skin rash – another inflammatory skin condition.
- One study showed that Aloe Vera has more anti-inflammatory potential than hydrocortisone cream.
- Review studies mention that Aloe Vera improves wound healing and burn wounds.
One study concluded:
“It (Aloe Vera) can be effective for genital herpes, psoriasis, human papilloma virus, seborrheic dermatitis, aphthous stomatitis, xerosis, lichen planus, frostbite, burn, wound healing and inflammation.”
Aloe Vera can work on all these conditions because it’s strongly anti-inflammatory. For the same reason it can help with acne also.
What other users say about Proactiv Deep Cleansing Wash?
Proactiv body wash (Deep Cleansing Wash) is generally speaking well-liked by users. After reading tens and tens of reviews the conclusion is that the product is somewhat more effective and perhaps better tolerated than Proactiv Renewing Cleanser. Though as with all acne treatments different people get different results. So your mileage may vary.
There were also a bunch of negative and less than positive reviews. Some people say that the product did nothing for them, while some say it irritated their skin and actually made acne worse. This is normal as there are always people for whom the product just doesn’t work or who are sensitive to it.
This body wash appears to be more exfoliating than Proactiv’s Renewing Cleanser. So if you have a sensitive skin this may not be the right choice for you.
Finally, you should take these conclusions with a grain of salt. There just aren’t enough reliable reviews that we could draw firm conclusions on this product. It looks promising, but can’t say for sure yet.
Where to buy
As with most of their other products Proactiv prefers to sell the Deep Cleansing Wash as part of a larger kit. It’s not available on its own from Proactiv’s website.
But the good news is that you can buy it from Amazon, and even at a discounted price. You also don’t have to worry getting entangled into Proactiv’s auto-billing programs.
Conclusion and recommendations
All said and done the Proactiv body wash is a fairly good acne treatment product. It combines proven acne fighter salicylic acid with soothing botanical ingredients.
And while this is a good formulation it doesn’t bring much new to the table. Given this if you have already tried other salicylic acid based cleansers it’s hard to see how Proactiv’s Deep Cleansing Wash would work better.
While the product won’t work miracles users are generally speaking happy with it. So as long as your skin isn’t overtly sensitive you might want to give this a try.
